This morning, while I was waiting on a subway platform, I paged through last week’s The New Yorker…A Talk of the Town on “countdowns” caught my eye — it seemed to have many of the same preoccupations as “On Modern Time.” “It’s an egg-timer world,” wrote Nick Paumgarten. “L.E.D displays on the subway platform tell you how many minutes until the next train pulls in.” There were eight whole minutes before my train came. I wished in vain that I were reading the thing on an iPad. I wanted to e-mail it to myself. Maybe there was a blog post here about how all the assigning editors in town seemed to be having trouble with modernity and/or realllly needed that vacation? But without an Internet connection, I forgot about the idea.
